There is no chance that anyone gets to sleep in in our home.

There is a thump, another thump, a couple of thumps and that is The Power stretching her legs out of her pod (she sleeps in a furry pod like a joey) on the floor beside the bed.

We get a little high pitched breath noise.

And that’s when it starts.

"Grizzle" – a one word moniker like "Madonna" or "Bono" or "Rhianna" starts to do her very best grizzling noise – and it can go on for as long as Pavarotti can hit a high note.

Muttering "shut up Grizzle" only encourages her – knowing she has woken her quarry (husband and I) and she is prepared to come back and do a second concert, with a couple of encores…..

Thump, Thump (like a base guitar) grizzle, grizzle, thump, grizzle, grizzle thump, long grizzle…..it does not stop until I fling the covers back and swing my legs over the edge of the bed.

There she is, swaying to her own music like a weird Taylor Swift, all legs, head on the side, doing some sort of Kath and Kim Riverdance move with her front legs.

It’s cute for the first 200 times……

Everyone is up, the doors are open, and I express Quinn’s bladder and bowel and change her nappy – then get the medication for Kween and Harry – and by the time my eyes have opened I see Grizzle standing at the end of the hallway rug……waiting….like Dame Edna ready to hit the stage from the wings…..

I pick her up and the complete smugness is overwhelming. Eyes slitty shut, ears back, head bobbing, no neck – we go in to the bedroom and open the shutters and look out together.

Are you happy now?

The head is bobbing, the tongue is out, and I’m fairly sure she has done her duty for the day.

Good morning Grizzle girl 😘

No sleep ins at mine either. The grand old dame Laney is always ready for the day by 6am! And for those who say ‘you can’t teach an old dog new tricks’ haven’t met 12 yr old Laney-Pop. She has learnt that duck jerky is the first offering of the day while the kettle boils! And she dances and woofs until it is given LOL. Love these puppa stories. Have a lovely day everyone- and a great 2025.

Update on little Spencer. As you know he is going on 5 years and is in congestive heart failure. He has a very slow walk every second day, just a short one, a sniffathon, because he hates the pram.

His resting heart rate when asleep is good, under 30, but his cough is increasing – our vets are aware, it could be the size of his enormous heart pushing on his trachea – as he is already on meds for fluid around the heart.

Spencer is such a darling – and we know he won’t have a long life, but he has a good life and a loved life and that is the very best he can have.

My fletch has this also ….he is a long hair chihuahua. He is 10 he is on pimbotin and medicine for fluid also twice daily . He has a little cough occasionally and sometimes breathes loudly. He struggled in the heat the other day. I have some tablets that also chill him out which help a lot……but he only has one of them when he really needs it. I hate seeing him struggle . I'm not walking him in this heat …..even though he would love me too. My poor little boy it breaks my heart to see him like this. But I won't let him suffer when it comes time I will know. Then I have decided to do some fostering for you Denise.
